On the 12th November we had a book binding session as we have to make a book at the end of this project. I am thinking about hand making my book as it will add a personal feel so this was really interesting and helpful.

We got shown two methods:

- Japanese Stab Bind

- Saddle Stitch

The equipment you need is:

- card/paper

- a needle

- thread

- a bradawl (a tool that stabs holes into the paper, an alternate tool is a compass)

Saddle Stitch

  • measure out and mark 3-5 even points in the middle of your page (this is where you are going to bind your book

  • using your bradawl pierce the points

  • single thread your needle and don't tie the end

  • start in the middle and leave a few inches so you can tie your book together at the end

  • sew all the way to the left end then sew back the the middle

  • then sew to the right and back to the middle making sure you finish on the outside

  • tie the knot by threading under the stitch and loping a whole and threading through

  • sew the needle through to the inside and of the book and pulling tight so that the knot is pulled through

  • tie one last knot to make sure it doesn't come under and cut the excess thread

  • finally fold your book in half

Japanese stab binding

  • measure out and mark 3 or 4 even points an inch away from the left side of your paper

  • using your bradawl pierce the points

  • single thread your needle and don't tie the end

  • find the middle of your book and thread the middle/second hole leaving a inch of thread

  • wrap over the top of the book and back through

  • then move onto the next hole

  • repeat until you reach the last hole and wrap around the side and back through

  • repeat until you are back in the middle and thread through the middle and tie off in middle page of the book
