After my proposal tutorial it was advised to change my question and narrow it down. I thought about the main points I wanted to talk about and card up with a new question:
Is social media causing young people to feel differently about themselves?
This question is better as it is more focused and direct.
I will be discussing:
A brief history of the media
Statistics
Social media addiction
Which social media seems to be the worst/best for mental health
Influencers
To start off with I am going to be looking at the #StatusOfMind campaign and report.
RSPH and the Young Health Movement have published a new report examining the positive and negative effects of social media on young people’s health. The report includes a league table of social media platforms according to their impact on young people’s mental health. YouTube topped the table as the most positive, with Instagram and Snapchat coming out as the most detrimental to young people’s mental health and wellbeing
Then I am going to look at a report conducted by We Are Social and Hootsuite.
"The new 2018 Global Digital suite of reports from We Are Social and Hootsuite reveals that there are now more than 4 billion people around the world using the internet.
Well over half of the world’s population is now online, with the latest data showing that nearly a quarter of a billion new users came online for the first time in 2017. Africa has seen the fastest growth rates, with the number of internet users across the continent increasing by more than 20 percent year-on-year.
Much of this year’s growth in internet users has been driven by more affordable smartphones and mobile data plans. More than 200 million people got their first mobile device in 2017, and two-thirds of the world’s 7.6 billion inhabitants now have a mobile phone.
More than half of the handsets in use today are ‘smart’ devices too, so it’s increasingly easy for people to enjoy a rich internet experience wherever they are."
