The avant-garde art is personal, consciously artistic/ artisanal mode of autobiographically art.
Avant-garde art is often self funded and distributed on small networks.
“Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception.”
- Stan Brakhage
Theorising Dissidence
We looked at a long quote by Man Ray and he was saying how he wants to rock the boat, he wants to provoke something. “Each one of us, in his timidity, has a limit beyond which he is outraged.” There are things that annoy us and we should be able express ourselves even it goes against what we expect of art.

This image got very sexualised, people found the throat very shocking as it was so exposed and bare. As she has a lot of bare skin showing people have been conditioned to find it sexual. But when you think about it nothing in this image is actually sexual.
How does the avant-garde challenge art conventions
Man Ray (left), Eikoh Hosoe (middle), Robert Mapplethorpe (right)
These images are very provocative and they have been made for male pleasure instead of female pleasure.
Non-conformity and the visual voice
“A writer or painter cannot change the world. But they can keep an essential margin of nonconformity alive”
- Luis Buñuel
Can they change the world?
Art can start convocations from which action can be taken.
Street Art
“The way I look at the landscape is forever changed because of street art”
- Shepard Fairey

Street art can change the way we view things, it can be really powerful but others feel it depends on its surroundings. If it's scruffy around it then it doesn't have such an impact.
Jenny Holzer Marquees series

Monopolisation of space, gallery spaces are too hierarchal. The street is occupied by a lot of people, however you may not see it as it is in such a normal space. It is asking us to look deeper into our everyday spaces, Holzer is disrupting advertising spaces.
Barbara Kruger
Art and Space

This image contains a lot of negative space , it is very ghostly. It is not being directed to men, she was an activist.
Her work very much looks like an advert as it is so bold and eye catching containing slogan tabloid imagery. The colour scheme reminds me of The Sun newpaper.
Banksy
Banksy is an anonymous UK based street artist, political activist, and film director. His satirical street art has a sense of dark humour with an anti authoritative nature. He has a distinctive stencilling technique. Some say he has become sensationalised.

Dismaland

Activist art
Anti capitalist
Self mocking
Are people playing into his hand? When people first went it was going over their heads as everyone was just taking selfies with everything.
